Dr. John V. Colombo

With deep sorrow and infinite gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Dr. John Vincent Colombo, who departed this life on June 1, 2026. His life ended on his father's Birthday, an apt time for the reunion of their spirits and a reminder of the enduring ties of family. Born on February 5, 1938, Dr. Colombo was the beloved son of Joseph and Mary Colombo, brother to Gerald "Jerry" and James. He is remembered not just as a dedicated physician, but as a devoted Son, Brother, Husband, Father, and Grandfather.

Dr. Colombo was the first in his family to attend college. His academic journey began with honors at The University of Detroit, after which he earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City. He distinguished himself in the field of Anesthesiology. Among his many career highlights was his early adoption and use of epidural techniques for labor pain management. His work earned him the respect of his peers and, ultimately, induction into the Anesthesiology Hall of Fame. Dr. Colombo's craft and dedication improved the lives of countless patients.

Outside the operating room, John's proudest accomplishments were his sons James (Kathy) Colombo, John (Jennifer) Colombo, and Michael (Melissa) Colombo and his cherished grandchildren; Daniel, Gianna, Maria, and Cecilia Colombo. He poured his heart and wisdom into supporting and educating his family, always emphasizing the importance of curiosity, rigor, and perseverance.

A man of many passions, Dr. Colombo completed multiple Century (100 Mile) bicycle rides. Eventually the allure of the internal combustion engine won out, leading him to finding joy in driving fast cars and riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles through the beautiful countryside of Central Ohio and beyond.

His boundless curiosity drove him to read extensively and engage in spirited discussion on wide ranging topics. Throughout his life, his interest in all aspects of the universe and our place in it was unquenchable. He was always up for a discussion, no matter the topic. Dr. Colombo was as adept a listener as he was a speaker; a trait deeply appreciated by those fortunate enough to talk with him. Interest in string theory was a memorable passion of his that spanned many years, a characteristic shared by other abiding interests such as; the existence of God, faith v. reason, or why Notre Dame truly deserved one of the many national championships they were denied over the course of his lifetime.

At the heart of Dr. Colombo's life was his enduring partnership with his beloved wife of over 60 years, Louise M. "Gina" Colombo. Gina was not only his constant companion, but also his loving caregiver through his final days. They built a life together through a shared sense of purpose, one that placed family at the heart of their lives. Their bond was the cornerstone of their family, which was the source of his greatest pride. Together, they built a satisfying life for themselves and their children and grandchildren.

Dr. Colombo was a longtime resident of Bellefontaine, which afforded him the ability to develop many long-term friendships of substance. His mother told him, "To have a friend, you must be a friend." He was a friend to a great many, none more so than William "Bill" Montgomery, his partner in crime for so many of life's adventures. These connections provided him with great comfort throughout his life. He came to rely on and cherish them profoundly.

Dr. John Vincent Colombo leaves behind a legacy of drive, compassion, industry, and intellectual curiosity. As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life richly pursued. He will be dearly missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished in our hearts.
