Gary was born in Bellefontaine on June 24, 1958, to the late Richard Everett “Dick” Carnes and Madelene M. (Titus) Carnes. He married Marilyn A. Overly on March 17, 1979, in Bellefontaine, and she preceded him in death on January 30, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law Larry Flora.

Yoder of DeGraff; 6 grandchildren: Joshua and Preston Carnes, Bentley Flahie, Hayden, Savannah and Mac Yoder; a sister Pamela Flora of West Liberty; his fiancé Nancy Burrey of Bellefontaine; and his mother-in-law Audry Overly of Bellefontaine.
Gary worked for the Bellefontaine Police Department as a patrol officer and dispatcher for nearly 10 years, then went to work for the city in vehicle maintenance for another 20 years, before retiring in 2016. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, shooting sporting clays, hunting, and camping. He also filled his time tinkering with many different projects including knives and leatherwork.
